Saxton’s Cornet Band

Saxton’s Cornet Band is a musical ensemble that re-creates the sound and appearance of brass bands popular during the American Civil War era. The band’s performers are professional musicians dedicated to musical excellence as well as historical accuracy. They use instruments original to the Civil War or carefully made reproductions, as well as musical arrangements from Civil War-era sources.

The band is named for the original Saxton’s Cornet Band of Lexington, KY. Henry Saxton formed the group during the Civil War, and the original band remained popular throughout the 19th century.

These days, a Saxton’s Cornet Band performance mixes historical music, practices, and narration with a sense of humor.

Salute to American Music
A musical journey through American history with the Saxton’s Cornet Band’s performances of brass band music of the mid-1800s, jazz pianist Ray Johnson’s salute to jazz, and the Juggernaut Jug Band’s eclectic mix of rousing tunes from the 1930s to the present. (#603)
