This down-home evening of brass, blues and bluegrass music feautres the Eastern Kentucky University Brass Quintet, bluegrass musician Homer Ledford, and Robert Phillips and the Fender Benders, a blues band. Byron Crawford is the program's guest host.
The evening begins with the EKU Brass Quintet which carries on the tradition of the 10,000 brass bands that were once active in towns all across the country. On any summer evening, you could have found a brass band entertaining the community somewhere in the country. For In Performance the quintet plays both classical and traditional selections.
Next, Homer Ledford, who specializes in the traditional style of bluegrass music nurtured by Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs, performs several selections on banjo, fiddle, and musical saw.
Robert Phillips and the Fender Benders bring the evening to a close playing straight-ahead rhythm and blues, mixing originals with classic work by such blues masters as B. B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
This program premiered on September 3, 1997.
