The setting for this 1999 edition of In Performance is the RiverPark Center in Owensboro, which opened in 1992. Because its situated on the Ohio River, water is the theme for the evening, which includes the Owensboro Symphony performing excerpts from Handels Water Music, Thomsons Suite from The River, and excerpts from Tchaikovskys Swan Lake. The orchestra also performs Allegro Vivo from Coolidges Pioneer Dances.
The Sutton Singers, an Owensboro childrens choir under the direction of Julie White, perform several pieces before being joined by gospel singer Alma Randolph for Peace Like a River/Amen. Randolph follows with two more show-stoppers: Amazing Grace and America the Beautiful.
For the final performance of the evening, pianist Lee Luvisi joins the orchestra to perform the Rondo Allegro from Beethovens Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73. Born in Louisville, Luvisi enjoys an international reputation and is Artist in Residence at the University of Louisville School of Music.
Sky Yancey is the program host.
The RiverPark Center is an active cultural center, hosting more than 1,000 events each year. The center also provides a wide range of educational programs and a full schedule of dazzling productions by touring national companies. It is home to the Owensboro Symphony, the Owensboro Concert Association, the Owensboro Dance Theatre, and Owensboro Community Colleges Oak Island Players.
