JazzAmericas gift to the world of musicand poetry are in the spotlight for this In Performance. The Mike Tracy Quartet, from Louisville, opens the evening with a variety of jazz standards as well as two pieces with Kentucky connections, including an inspired piano/saxophone duet of My Old Kentucky Home. The quartet is made up of Tracy on saxophone, Harry Pickens on piano, Darryel Cotton on drums, and Tyrone Wheeler on bass.
Next up is a series of readings featuring Governors School for the Arts alumni and the schools director, poet Frank X Walker. Ellen Hagan, a graduate of Bardstown High School, and Shayla Lawson, a graduate of Dunbar High School in Lexington, are the featured GSA poets.
Closing the evening is Gayle King of Louisville, backed by the quartet. Sky Yancey is host for the evenings performances, which were recorded in 2000.
