Abbey of Gethsemani

At the Abbey of Gethsemani in Nelson County, Kentucky, Trappist monks have led lives of prayer, work, and service for over 150 years.

The monks earn their living by making cheese, fruitcake, and bourbon fudge. Gethsemani Farms allows them to provide for themselves and the community at the same time.

The Abbey is a monastery in the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OCSO), part of the body of the Roman Catholic Church.

Learn about noted Trappist Monk and author Thomas Merton (known in the monastery as Fr. Louis) and his Louisville connection, in our LL Etc..
