Bakeries with a Twist

In this dining segment, we're not talking dessert first. We're talking dessert only!

Specialty bakeries, particularly "cupcakeries", are all the rage in big cities like New York and Chicago. Now, Louisville is getting a taste.

We see what’s cooking at three of the River City’s newest and trendiest bakeshops, in a Louisville Life story that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

We feature three Louisville bakeries: The Cupcake Shoppe, which specializes in gourmet designer cupcakes; BabyCakes, an "artisan cupcakery"; and Cake Flour, "a natural baking company".

The Cupcake Shoppe, which opened in September 2008, promotes itself as Louisville’s first gourmet cupcakery. The pint-sized pastries are baked fresh daily from natural ingredients ... and in small batches. The cupcake boutique carries nine flavors every day with two Daily Specials and one Monthly Special.

The Cupcake Shoppe has recently partnered with Nanz & Kraft Florists to offer delivery service, offers curbside service and will custom design cupcakes for weddings and special occasions.

BabyCakes Louisville doesn't have its own retail space, but business is booming!

The mother-daughter team of Linda Hess and Cara Jarrell began their homemade cupcake delivery operation out of the St. Matthews Farmers Market. They use local and organic baking products to produce more than 30 varieties of cupcakes.

BabyCakes Louisville offers customized services for any special occasion and takes orders by phone and email.

Lastly, putting a twist on the traditional cupcake is Cake Flour on Market, which makes vegan varieties.

Cake Flour offers freshly prepared pastries, quiche, select organic coffee and teas ... and special order items are available for special occasions.

Cake Flour's ingredients are all natural, organic, and locally produced when available.

A graduate of the French Culinary Institute in New York, owner Claudia DeLatorre stresses that no artificial ingredients are ever used in her bakeshop - no artificial dyes, flavorings or sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, refined sugar or flour, or preservatives.

She's even stirred her passion for clean living over into her retail space which is covered in low VOC paints, has cabinets and countertops that are formaldehyde- and urea-free, and is equipped with energy efficient appliances and lighting.

A sweet spot to turn to for cupcakes in Southern Indiana is Cupcakes for Chloe - a cupcake delivery service based in New Albany.

Originally created as a fundraiser for a young leukemia patient, Cupcakes for Chloe is a small operation that raises money for a variety of commuity organizations, including local seniors' homes, firehouses and Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.
