When restaurant manager George Kerns set out to create a specialty pastry nearly 50 years ago, it wasn't a half-baked idea!
Often imitated but never duplicated, DERBY-PIEŽ continues to be a favorite crowd pleaser -- and the signature dessert for Louisvillians at Kentucky Derby time.
Due to the pie's popularity, its name was registered with the U.S. Patent Office and the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1968.
Since then the closely guarded family recipe has been baked and distributed solely by Kern's Kitchen, which today remains a small family operation.
Louisville Life drops in to see what's cooking ... and learn how the local business remains a winner after nearly half a century.
