Mara Maldonado, Ballet Espanol
Since her professional debut in 1975 with the New York based Jose Antonio Spanish dance company, Mara Maldonado has been involved in performing, choreographing, and teaching the art of Spanish dance. A native of New York, she has performed and trained in New York and Spain independently. Since her arrival in Kentucky in 1980, she has brought this artform to a new area of the United States, creating a unique cultural resource in this state with the founding of the Spanish dance company, Ballet Espanol. Ms. Maldonado has taught people of all levels and all ages, from creating choreography and teaching character dance style to the full company of Kentucky Opera singers in productions including: "Carmen", "Tales of Hoffman", and "La Traviata", to teaching basic rhythms and folk dance patterns to rural children in Hardin County. In 1999, she established La Academia de Ballet Espanol for the training of Spanish dance in Kentucky.
