Frank J. O'Connell, FunnyBone Studio

An Editorial Director at Watson-Guptill Books in New York has described Frank's unique style of marker art, as "Painting with Markers". Frank is founder of the American Marker Society (1979) and has honed his style after 30 years of designing and illustrating with markers. Frank is the owner of FunnyBone Studio, a corporate design, sales promotion, illustration, WEBtoons and animation studio in Greenville, IN.

What motivates Frank to create with markers is the fluidity of the medium. He can create an array of colors by just using a variety of markers and a blender. Color in color moves easily on the special paper that he uses. Drying time is instant. The various techniques that he employs, add a special touch to the artwork. Many people think that the medium he uses is watercolor -- not markers. Each piece of art evokes a warmth and an invitation to the viewer to become part of the setting.

The American Marker Socirty is listed in Who's Who and Frank has exhibited extensively in local and national shows. His work is in the National Archives in Washington D.C. -- a major work that he did for the United States Army while in the service. Frank won the International Design Marker Contest for Eberhard-Faber. Many of his marker paintings are in both private collections and gallery showings all around the country, as well as here in Kentuckiana.

Frank is presently teaching cartooning for kids through the Louisville Visual Art Association and will be teaching a variety of art courses this Spring, Summer and Fall for Universities and Colleges here in Kentuckiana. Also, Frank will be teaching independent classes in drawing, watercolor, acrylics, markers, and caricatures, as well.
