Hog Operation, Bluegrass Band

Hog Operation

The Hog Operation is a five-piece ensemble playing a musical style that draws on all ingredients of the American musical melting pot. The rich Celtic sounds of the early Anglo settlers blend with the lonesome sound of African-American field hollers, and both mix with the jazz, blues, pop, and rock styles of the 20th century. The band offers energetic presentations of traditional bluegrass standards, forgotten folk songs, and Hog Operation originals, as well as innovative arrangements of mainstream music favorites. A show might very well start its musical path in Knott County via the traditional “Horse and Buggy O,” stop in Bardstown at “My Old Kentucky Home” to see the “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” then find out that “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” when doing the “Derby Reel” “On the Mountain” at “The Old Barndance.”

Hog Operation has two CDs available, Nice Ham Bites and the self-titled Hog Operation, and a home on the web at

The Band

Larry Raley: bass and vocals
Larry learned his vocal craft at family gatherings, picking parties, and all-day church meetings. He has performed internationally and on nationally broadcast TV shows such as KET’s The Lonesome Pine Specials.

Tony Myers: mandolin, vocals, and guitar
A master of all roots music styles, Tony is a lexicon of all that is blues, bluegrass, or swing. He has been a fixture in the Louisville music community for more than 20 years.

Hog Operation Mike Schroder: fiddle and mandolin
Performing classical pieces with a symphony orchestra as a mandolin soloist, fiddling in a Celtic band, leading a 30-member mandolin orchestra, and being a Grammy finalist with the Buzzard Rock Old Time String Band are all in a day’s work for Mike.

Steve Cooley: banjo, vocals, guitar, and resonator guitar
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Steve has been nominated for several Grammys and for a musical Pulitzer. He has shared the stage with artists ranging from folk legends Jean Ritchie, Doc Watson, and Bill Monroe to pop singer Linda Ronstadt to jam-band box-office sensations Phish. Additionally, Steve has been seen on national and international TV appearances on TNN, Hee-Haw, NBC’s Today Show, Cambridge Folk Fest Live on the BBC, and The Lonesome Pine Specials.

John Hawkins: guitars
“Screamin’” John is the newest member and a powerhouse on the guitar. Formerly an A&M recording artist, he is a first-call recording-session ace and a dynamic live performer.
