Claudia Ronaldson, Art Therapist

Claudia Ronaldson Claudia Ronaldson is an assistant professor in the Expressive Therapies Program at the University of Louisville’s School of Allied Health Sciences. She came to Louisville from San Francisco, where she worked for 12 years as an art therapist and administrator in a residential special education school for emotionally disturbed boys. Claudia has a master’s in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a master’s in psychology from Sonoma State University, and a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of San Francisco. She is a board-certified art therapist who works primarily with school-age children and their families.

The mission statement of the Expressive Therapies Program explains what Claudia and her colleagues do this way:

“Art therapy is a human service profession. It provides individuals the means and support to express and explore feelings, thoughts, problems, and potentials through images and art media in comparison to verbal communication. Art therapists place more emphasis on the process of self-discovery and personal growth than the final art project. They work with individuals of all ages who have varying degrees of functional or organic impairment, and also with normal populations in schools and growth centers.

“It is the mission of this program to educate qualified graduate students as competent art therapists; utilize their talents and experiences while providing a framework that stimulates their growth and development as both therapists and creative, tolerant human beings; and prepare them to professionally use the art therapy process in clinical practice with culturally diverse persons having a wide range of needs.”
