Zoe Speaks, singer/songwriter duo

Zoe Speaks

Carla Gover and Mitch Barrett are the husband-and-wife singer/songwriters behind the talented creation Zoe Speaks. The duo is named after their oldest daughter, Zoe. Carla and Mitch also have a newer addition to their family: Their daughter Mayzie was born in February 2001.

They have received numerous national awards for their songwriting, including the coveted Kerrville NewFolk Award and two 1st-place slots in Nashville’s Chris Austin Contest. While their Appalachian backgrounds are conveyed in their music, they ultimately defy categorization. Jumping in and out of their Eastern Kentucky vernacular to play everything from old-time gospel to guitar-thumping contemporary acoustic tunes, Zoe Speaks creates its own style of music. Mitch and Carla write what they know, drawing on themes of family, home, money, spirituality, relationships, and the environment. They Zoe Speaks accompany themselves on guitar, clawhammer banjo, lap dulcimer, and, occasionally, feet. On their tours in the U.S. and abroad, they also offer an Appalachian Heritage Variety Show, featuring storytelling, music, and dance from the mountain. Carla and Mitch have each recorded solo projects, and Zoe Speaks has released one CD, entitled Pearl.
