Robert Franz, Louisville Orchestra

Robert Franz

Robert Franz is the associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra and music director and founder of the Carolina Chamber Symphony.

A champion of new music, Robert conducts the ASCAP Award-winning new music concert series New Dimensions. He has also been a co-host of In a Different Key, a weekly contemporary music program on WUOL radio. On the concert stage, he has conducted world premieres of works by Paul Brink, Lawrence Dillon (in connection with a KET/Louisville Orchestra instructional series called Creating Stories and Music), David Dzubay, David Froom, Louis Karchin, Terese Kaptur, Vaclav Nelhybel, Russell Peck, Steve Rouse, Marc Satterwhite, and David Stock.

Robert is also a strong advocate of arts education. He has designed and implemented educational projects not just with the Louisville Orchestra but also for the Carolina Chamber Symphony, the West End Chamber Ensemble, and the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony—including that organization’s innovative Bolton Research Project.

Before coming to Louisville, Robert had previously held the positions of music director at the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony, assistant conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra, and assistant conductor of the International Music Program Orchestra (NCSA) and music director of its Summer Session Orchestra. He has guest conducted the North Carolina, Chattanooga, Charleston, National Repertory, and Winston-Salem symphonies; the Cumberland Valley Chamber Players; and the Killington Music Festival String Orchestra.
