Doug Sumey, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival

Doug Sumey has been the director of education for the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival since August 2000.

Doug received his bachelor of arts degree in business administration and communications from William Jewell College in Liberty, MO in 1992. During his time at William Jewell, he also took part in a tutorial-style literary studies program at England’s Oxford University, focusing on the works of William Shakespeare and C.S. Lewis.

As the national showcase director for Five Star Speakers and Trainers from 1992 to 1994, Doug developed and coordinated professional speaker showcases in Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Kansas City. He also has six years of professional theater experience as an actor, director, and educator in Kansas City, MO.

Doug came to the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival after completing three successful years as Camp Shakespeare director for the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. As a coordinator, manager, and teacher, he built the program from one to five camp sites over those three years. And in the summer of 2000, he developed Heart of America’s first advanced performance camp, Shakespeare Exploration.
