Jerry Tolson, Musician

Jerry Tolson

Jerry Tolson is an assistant professor in music education and jazz studies at the University of Louisville, where he directs instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles and teaches jazz pedagogy classes.

A graduate of Drake University and the University of North Texas, Jerry is active as a clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor, and jazz camp instructor throughout the country. He has also organized, administered, and presented jazz through festivals and educational activities and co-founded a series of teacher training institutes sponsored by the International Association of Jazz Educators that are held at several sites around the country. As a composer/arranger, he writes for both large and small instrumental ensembles as well as vocal jazz ensembles.

Jerry Tolson BandJerry is also a performer on woodwinds, keyboards, and vocals, leading three of his own groups. He has worked with such popular artists as the Temptations, the Four Tops, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, and Manhattan Transfer, and with such jazz artists as Pete Christlieb, Phil Wilson, James Moody, Benny Golson, and Marvin Stamm. Jerry’s CD Nu View includes nine original jazz selections. At the time of his Mixed Media visit, he was working on his next release, Live at Mom’s.

A member of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and the recipient of the Kentucky Music Educators Association College Teacher of the Year Award for 1998-99, Jerry is also a board member of the Louisville Jazz Society and a former member of the International Association for Jazz Education executive board.
