David Hockney, Visual Artist

David Hockney, art   David Hockney

David Hockney is one of the world’s most critically acclaimed contemporary artists. His innovative work influences nearly every medium: painting, drawing, stage design, photography, and printmaking. David first achieved international renown in his mid-20s as a Pop artist. His phenomenal success since then has been based not only on the flair, wit, and versatility of his work, but also on his colorful personality.

David visited with Mixed Media to discuss his book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters, published in 2001. In it, he rewrites the story of how Western artists made the great drawings and paintings of the last six centuries, arguing that artists of 600 years ago used lenses and mirrors to project color images of their subjects onto flat surfaces, then traced those projected scenes onto canvas or paper.

David’s visit to Louisville was part of Kentucky Author Forum Presents. KET taped an hour-long conversation about Secret Knowledge for that series, in which David was interviewed by New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman.
