Pleiades Theatre Company

The Pleiades Theatre Company, named for the Seven Sisters of mythology who were turned into stars, was created in October 1995 with the aim of supporting women’s theater in Louisville and the region. The stated mission of Pleiades is “to provide the Kentuckiana area with opportunities for women artists, to promote theatrical productions that focus on women’s issues, and to introduce a new generation of theatregoers to classical and contemporary drama in a context respectful of diversity.”

When the charter Board of Directors convened for the first time, it consisted of Megan Burnett, president; Charlotte Hammett, vice president; Emily Gnadinger, treasurer; and Trish Salerno, secretary. Since then, additional board members from the community have expanded the inclusiveness and diversity of the organization.

Pleiades’ first production was a stage reading of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan, performed as a fund-raiser in the fall of 1996 at the Rudyard Kipling in Old Louisville. The 1997-98 season saw the beginning of a new program, the Stars of the Future New Play Festival. Each year, new plays are commissioned as well as solicited from the public for the festival. In March 1999, Pleiades branched out into radio with another new venture, the Kentucky Women Project. A series of 23 two-minute radio vignettes aired during Women’s History Month on Public Radio Partnership station WFPL 89.3 FM. The vignettes were adapted from the book Kentucky Women by Louisville author Eugenia K. Potter, celebrating the lives of women throughout Kentucky’s 200-year history.
