Wynton Marsalis, Musician and Educator

Wynton Marsalis

Trumpet virtuoso and music educator Wynton Marsalis is the most accomplished and acclaimed jazz artist and composer of his generation as well as a distinguished classical musician. He has helped propel jazz to the forefront of American culture through his brilliant performances, recordings, compositions, and educational efforts, as well as his visionary leadership as artistic director of the internationally renowned arts organization Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Wynton’s prominent position in the performing arts was secured in April 1997, when he became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music, for his work Blood on the Fields, commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. This honor is only the latest in a series of accolades he has earned throughout the course of his multi-faceted career as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, recording artist, and educator.

During his visit to Louisville, Wynton also taped a Kentucky Author Forum Presents program. His numerous other appearances on public television include a major role as adviser and on-screen commentator for Ken Burns’ landmark series Jazz.
