Lisa Austin, mixed-media artist

Lisa Austin artworkLisa Austin was a full-time studio potter from 1982 to 2000, specializing in pit-fired porcelain. This ancient technique involves firing the vessel in a hole in the ground. The smoke from the fired materials leaves a smoky design on the surface of the finished pot that Native Americans call “fire clouds.” Lisa’s work was influenced by the year she spent teaching on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico.

Lisa’s pottery won her several grants and scholarships, as well as national and regional awards, and her ceramics are in permanent private and public collections across the country. But she had to close her pottery business for medical reasons in 2000. Since then, she has been working with mixed media—and conquering this new artistic medium as well. She has won several scholarships and grants to work with nationally known fiber artists Jane Burch Cochran and Nikki Bonet. She also has studied mixed-media techniques with Australian artist Keith Lo Bue, Atlanta painter Ray Perriotti, and fiber artist Lida Gordon.

Though primarily interested in 3-D assemblage and collage, Lisa frequently uses canvas and paint in her work. Her aim is to make one-of-a-kind pieces for private commissions and gallery exhibits. Her work can be seen in the “9/11” show sponsored by the Louisville Visual Art Association and in the upcoming Early Times Scholars exhibit at the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Gallery in January 2003.
