Georgetown College

In the last few months, Georgetown College has taken some giant leaps to provide a more creative environment for its students, the campus community, and Central Kentucky, primarily in the visual arts. In the summer of 2002, the college launched a partnership with the Headley-Whitney Museum in Lexington and named Christine Huskisson executive director of all galleries and collections.

Another initiative is a series of public sculptures that will be known as the Walk of Faiths. The first work, dedicated in September 2002, is a stylized Hebrew symbol by artist Dennis Whitcopf of Atlanta. The piece is based on the first two letters in “L’Chaim,” the Jewish blessing meaning “To Life.”

Georgetown College also recently opened the Dr. Donald L. and Dorothy Jacobs Art Gallery on the main floor of its Ensor Learning Resource Center. Well-known works by Andrew Wyeth, Hans Hoffman, Christo, and Robert Rauschenberg highlight the collection, while contemporary artists and regional talent strengthen its appeal. Dr. Jacobs, a retired Cincinnati surgeon, and his wife have donated most of this collection, which includes works by artists from Canada, England, Poland, Russia, Austria, Peru, Japan, France, Germany, and the United States. As with the Headley-Whitney partnership and the sculpture series, the Jacobs Gallery will be used by the college to advance its commitment to intellectual and social growth through a liberal arts education.
