In the Mood: The Big Band Era in the Bluegrass

Byron Stripling In the 1940s and ’50s, big band and swing music were sweeping the nation, and popular Lexington and Central Kentucky dance clubs like the Joyland Dance Casino were attracting some of the biggest names in the industry. With the 17-member DiMartino-Osland Jazz Orchestra belting out big band and jazz standards and a dance floor filled with couples swinging to the beat, KET re-creates this epic period in regional history for a magical evening of music and memories.

Through a combination of musical performance and documentary, In the Mood: The Big Band Era in the Bluegrass takes a nostalgic tour of the Lexington-area scene during this important era in the annals of American culture. This KET production explores the music and the history behind Lexington’s long-gone clubs, dance halls, and ballrooms, which drew such legendary musicians as Duke Ellington and Woody Herman. The program premiered March 6, 2003. It is available as a thank-you gift for a contribution to KET; call (800) 866-0366 for information.
