Louise Calvin, Artist

Louise Calvin artwork by Louise Calvin The late Louise Calvin of Lexington was an accomplished sculptor, but her greatest work may have been as a teacher. As an assistant professor of art at Transylvania University from 1969 to 1980, teaching sculpture and design classes, she influenced and inspired a generation of students through her commitment as both professor and mentor.

Calvin developed such a strong bond with three of her students—Douglas Baker, Margaret Pike Cronin, and Donna Glassford—that after her death in March 2002, they decided to maintain Calvin’s extensive collection of personal sculptures. With the help of her husband, Jim Calvin, they formed a limited liability company and created a traveling exhibition of her work. Transy’s own Morlan Gallery was the first venue for this traveling celebration of an enduring legacy.
