Hindman Settlement School
![]() Hindman Settlement School, in Eastern Kentuckys Knott County, focuses its educational efforts on children with learning differences/dyslexia. After teachers, parents, or others identify a child as having dyslexic characteristics, the staff at Hindmans James Still Learning Center conducts an intensive screening to determine whether the program can meet the childs specific needs. The schools multi-sensory, hands-on program offers a small pupil-to-teacher ratio and serves children in grades 1-8. The Hindman Settlement School also continues its historical dedication to preserving the rich traditions of the past in Eastern Kentucky. Cultural workshops such as Appalachian Family Folk Week, held in June; the annual Appalachian Writers Workshop; and Artists-in-Residence programs help promote the arts of the region. The Still Center also offers after-school and daytime programs in four counties as well as a six-week summer tutorial for those needing extra attention in certain subject areas.
