2003 Governors Awards in the Arts
In early 2004, Gov. Ernie Fletcher announced the 2003 recipients of the Governors Awards in the Arts. These annual awards, coordinated by the Kentucky Arts Council, are the Commonwealths most prestigious awards in the arts, honoring Kentucky individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made outstanding and significant contributions to the arts in Kentucky. The 2003 honorees are Bill and Josephine DAmato Richardson, Whitesburg, Milner Award; The Judd FamilyAshley, Naomi, and Wynonna, National Award; Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, Lexington, Artist Award; Community Trust Bank, Pikeville, Business Award; Montgomery County Council for the Arts, Mount Sterling, Community Arts Award; Vernell Bennett, Frankfort, Education AwardIndividual; Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Education AwardOrganization; Lestel Childress, Park City, Folk Heritage Award; City of Berea, Government Award; and Business First of Louisville, Media Award. The Kentucky Arts Council is a state agency within the Commerce Cabinet. Working in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the council invests in programs that develop vibrant communities, provide lifelong education in the arts, and support arts participation.
