Uwe Ommer, photographer

Uwe Ommer Photographer Uwe Ommer traveled four years and 180,000 miles to photograph one thousand different families from around the world. 1,000 Families features near life-size portrait photographs that capture the traditions and social conditions of over 130 countries, creating a “Family Album of Planet Earth” and underlining the importance of family to all cultures. Using his signature white backdrop and the same lighting in each photo, the collection illustrates the story of families while expressing what it means to be part of a family and the family of man. Speed Art Museum is hosting 1,000 Families now through November 28. Uwe Ommer

We are also proud to tell you about a similar exhibit that is now touring in the Louisville Free Public Libraries. Photographed by local photographer Laura Ospital, the exhibit is a partnership between the Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Metro Office for International Affairs. New Matriarchs: Louisville is a striking and intimate look into the lives of seven different women, all recent immigrants to Louisville. The New Matriarchs: Louisville exhibit will be at the Iroquois Library now through December 15th.
