Bybee Pottery

Walter Cornelison Bybee Pottery

Bybee Pottery, the oldest existing pottery west of the Alleghenies, is located in the small rural town of Bybee among the hills of southern Madison County—and has been since the mid-1800s. Walter Cornelison, 75 at the time of our visit, is the fifth-generation owner of this family business.

At Bybee, the process of mining the clay, grinding it in the antique pug mill, and then throwing and shaping it by hand into articles of ornamental and practical use is very much the same today as it was more than a century ago. Although the process may seem rough, Walter says that it’s always a delight to see the finished product.
