Kentucky ceramics artist and teacher Wayne Ferguson is well regarded throughout the state and within the art and craft industry. His mother first handed him clay to mold as a way to occupy and interest an otherwise mischievous child. But as Wayne grew, so did his skills.

Wayne often tackles social issues in his work, but he does it with such flair and humor that his pieces and his message are welcomed by a broad audience. His art is often colorful and whimsical, telling stories featuring animals and human figures.

The artist’s own life story took a difficult turn in August 2004, when a car accident left him blind in his right eye—a major injury for anyone, but particularly so for a visual artist. In December, fellow artists from across Kentucky donated pieces for an auction to raise money for Wayne, who does not have health insurance. The auction helped get him out from under his medical bills, and now Wayne has taken on the altered vision as just another artistic challenge.
