Damon Farmer, sand sculptor
![]() Damon Farmer, an accomplished artist in everything from oil and canvas to computer graphic animation, does much of that work on his Woodford County farm. But the medium for which he’s best known requires travel: He roams all over the world creating fantastic sculptures in sand. His talents in this distinctive and transitory medium have earned him top accolades in cities close to home, like Louisville and Owensboro, and as far away as Italy and China. Some recent projects have included the Presepe di Sabbia (Nativity of Sand) in Jesolo, Italy, which he worked on for the third year in a row in 2004, and a “Sultans of Sand” exhibit in that same city in spring 2004. The ancient Egypt-themed display drew almost 100,000 visitors during its 30-day existence. In September 2004, Damon won the Sculptor’s Choice award and the third-place medal at the North American Solo Sandsculpting Championship in Virginia Beach. He has also created pieces for Kentucky public art projects like Dynamic Doors, Show of Hands, and Horsemania.
