University of Louisville African American Theatre Program
![]() The African American Theatre Program (AATP) was founded in the fall of 1993 as a special discipline within the University of Louisville Theatre Arts Department. The AATP now offers nine courses of academic and practical study in the theater, making U of L the first institution of higher learning to grant a degree in African-American theater. The AATP offers an in-depth curriculum that focuses on black culture, history, and theory as well as the crafts of acting, directing, and designing for the theater. Its mission also includes staging works by new and established African-American dramatists and developing a broad audience for African-American theater.
