The Betweeners

In the Mixed Media studio this week, Lexington artist Jill Plaisted shares her enthusiasm for watercolors as she demonstrates a type of monotype printmaking using watercolor on Plexiglas. Jill draws her subject matter primarily from the surrounding landscape; many of her works are outdoor paintings completed on location in Kentucky, Indiana, and her native England.

Next, we tour a retrospective exhibit of the work of Louise Calvin, a long-time art professor at Transylvania University in Lexington. After her death in 2002, a group of former students came together to mount the exhibit, much of which focuses on Calvin’s exploration of wood as a primary medium. Former Transylvania student Donna Glassford, featured in the segment, continues to help promote her mentor’s work.

Music for this edition is supplied by the Betweeners, an acoustic band that plays original American roots music, blending elements of bluegrass, blues, swing, and soul. The band, which was founded by Hazard native and Louisville resident Stephen Couch, plays songs from the CD Matador Karma.
