Phil Clore with Mel Rexroat

Mel begins this edition by sitting down with writer Phil Clore, a native of Bardstown and the author of three poetry collections: White Soul; Thank You for Not Having Sex with Me; and Crossing the Street by Myself, which was a best-seller in Louisville when it was published in 2000. Phil, who is at work on an autobiographical play, reads from his work and talks about the importance of poetry.

Next, meet Joel Pett, winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoons. He began drawing editorial cartoons for the Lexington Herald-Leader in 1984 and has since been published in hundreds of newspapers and magazines nationwide. In addition to describing his “day job,” Joel talks about organizing and hosting the 2004 annual meeting of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, held in Lexington in late April. Highlights of the meeting included presentations by well-known cartoonists Garry Trudeau, Pat Oliphant, and Tony Auth, plus Kentucky native Larry Flynt discussing free-speech issues.
