Up first this week is documentary photographer Sam Abell, who has spent more than 30 years pursuing both journalism and artistic expression through in-depth projects for magazines and books. At the same time, he has maintained a career as an artist, teacher, and author. Sam has worked for the National Geographic Society since 1970, photographing more than 20 articles on cultural and wilderness subjects for National Geographic magazine and several books.

Next, we’re off to Cadiz to visit the Janice Mason Art Museum, housed in the city’s old post office. Even though this nonprofit art center is only five years old, it is already an integral part of this Western Kentucky town. It provides the community with changing exhibits and art classes ranging from stained glass to painting, and the museum staff works with local schools to provide art lesson plans.

The music for this edition comes from Down Under—by way of Bardstown. Matt and Pauly Zarb are brothers who grew up in a working musical family in Penrith, Australia. After winning the 2001 Folk Album of the Year award at the Queensland Sunny Music Awards, they relocated to Kentucky to expand their fan base in the U.S. Since then, they have performed their funky blend of folk music with Willie Nelson, Sam Bush, and Keith Urban.
