Born into a family of builders and craftsmen, Dan Neil Barnes grew up experiencing firsthand the satisfaction of creating something from an idea or inspiration. After studying under Arturo Sandoval, Miles Weiner, and John Tuska at the University of Kentucky and with Laura Hallock of Lexington, Dan began creating his own original stained-glass designs combining light, color, and texture. He shows us some of the untraditional results in our first artist profile for this edition.
Next, Mixed Media visits with Minnie Adkins, a renowned folk artist who specializes in woodcarving. Growing up on a farm, she was intrigued by the whittling she saw others do. Her father gave her a pocketknife, and soon she began her lifelong work of creating whimsical roosters, pigs, birds, and other animals from wood.
The music this time around comes from Paul Bennett and the 2nd Chance Band, who perform songs from their first CD, All Power. Paul was named Louisville Bass Player of the Year in 1998 by Leo magazine and has performed everywhere from the Las Vegas strip to churches. His gospel-jazz music is guaranteed to inspire and soothe.
