Mel with Paul K

This week, Mixed Media meets Dr. Sena Jeter Naslund, recently selected to be Kentucky’s poet laureate for 2005-06. Originally from Alabama, Sena is a professor at the University of Louisville and Spalding University. Her two most recent novels, Four Spirits and Ahab’s Wife, have achieved best-seller status and critical acclaim—and been featured selections on bookclub@ket.

We also pay a visit to the Appalachian Media Institute at Appalshop in Whitesburg. During AMI’s intensive summer program, young people learn how to use video cameras and audio equipment to document the unique traditions and complex issues of their mountain communities. AMI also offers year-round media literacy and production training for teens, teachers, and community groups in Central Appalachia. Its aim is to develop the critical and creative skills of young people in Eastern Kentucky and to get them involved in their communities and the world through making and sharing media.

The music for this edition comes from Paul K and the Weathermen. The Louisville-based group performs music from all over the map—a mixture of blues, folk, rock, and punk.
