Derrick Riley

Mel begins this edition by introducing Lexington artist Derrick Riley, whose woodcut prints have found their way into many private and public collections as well as national and international juried exhibitions. Derrick received his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. He describes his work as a personal commentary on society that uses humor and pop-culture references, taking cues from popular music, television, science fiction, and the work of other contemporary artists.

Next, the Mixed Media cameras visit Louisville’s Zephyr Gallery and an exhibit featuring the work of a teacher and her student. Suzanne Mitchell and her former student, Carolyn Courtney, both photographic artists, were brought together for a show at the gallery in 2001. While taking a look at their work, we also learn a little more about this artistic duo and their collaboration.

As for music, the program starts off with Louisville band A.M. Sunday performing its unique blend of Aretha Franklin soul, Talking Heads pop, James Brown funk, and Clash-style rock. We conclude with the Johnny Cash- and Hank Williams-inspired country-rock of Ashland singer/songwriter Rob McNurlin and his band, the Beatnik Cowboys.
