When Lexington artist Shirley Ardell Mason died in 1998, word quickly spread that she was the basis for the character “Sybil,” the woman whose battle with multiple personality disorder was detailed in a best-selling book and TV movie. As this Mixed Media profile shows, many of her 16 distinct personalities found expression through an impressive outpouring of paintings. Producer Tom Thurman documents this rare, personal and sometimes disturbing collection of art.
This week’s Mixed Media also showcases the talents of fiber artist Mary Craik, a 78-year-old retired university professor with a doctorate in educational psychology. She is a self-trained painter and fiber artist who started painting in 1997 and working with fabric in 1998. Mary makes acrylic paintings on silk, large quilts, contemporary wall hangings, banners, and wearable art.
The Betweeners, an acoustic band that plays original American roots music that blends the sounds of bluegrass, blues, swing, and soul, will start off the show, performing songs from their album Matador Karma. The group’s influences include a variety of artists, such as Ry Cooder, Willie Nelson, Mose Allison, and John Prine. We’ll leave you with a performance by AM Sunday, a group who describes their music as a mixture of rock, funk and soul.
