On this episode of Mixed Media we begin with a visit to the only enamel glass manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere--Thompson Enameling, Inc., in Newport, Kentucky. We will speak to Bill Helwig, an artist who has spent a lifetime working with the glass medium, combining it with the precious metals of gold and silver, and crafting works of art recognized nationwide and around the world. He refers to the resurgence in enamel crafts as an offspring of the “hippie 60’s”, while his art comes out of the “Beatnik 50’s”.

Our second guest is University of Kentucky art professor Garry Bibbs. Raised in Louisville, Bibbs now finds himself nationally recognized in the world of sculpture. Printmaker and fellow faculty member Ross Zirkle joins Bibbs in this look at one of Kentucky's most prolific and recognizable artists.

We’ll also check out musical performances from rock band The Blue Umbrellas and Primeform, a musical group from Lexington combining Jazz “form” with Rock and Roll “rhythms”.
