This episode of Mixed Media begins with a visit to Owensboros RiverPark Center, a performing arts center that served as the staging ground for an international tour of 42nd Street in the summer of 2004. Nearly 100 actors, dancers, crew members, and employees of the theatrical company were in town for four dress rehearsals and two performances, and at least 50 local people were hired to make costumes.
Next up is a profile of young opera singer Laquita Mitchell, a lyric soprano who has won the Grand Prize in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions and the prestigious Belvedere Prize in Vienna. A member of the Houston Grand Opera Company, she came to Louisville to work with the Gheens Great Expectations project at the Kentucky Center.
Finally, we visit the annual Hart County Fair to check out the basket-making contest, which showcases a traditional art that has been associated with the area near Mammoth Cave since the mid-1800s.
Music performances on this edition feature the roots-folk sounds of Wishing Chairthe duo of Miriam Davidson and Kiya Heartwood, who play a blend of contemporary folk originals and traditional songs. Steve Wogaman, founder and artistic director of New Performing Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural experiences of Kentucky children, caps off the show with some arrangements for piano.
