Black Diamond Choir

This program begins in Lexington, where craftsman Bob Ellis, a specialist in making carousel figures, recently conducted a workshop to teach woodcarving to a group of students at Lafayette High School’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts. As each group of students follows Bob’s instructions, the bits and pieces of wood slowly come together to form intricate carousel horses.

Next, Mixed Media visits the studio of encaustic artist Dane Waters. She demonstrates the techniques of her art form, which involves painting pigmented beeswax and resin onto canvas. Her large-format paintings and installations grapple with such major themes as globalization, music, and genetics.

At the Louisville Central Community Center, our cameras observe the work of Geraldine Woods. As coordinator of youth education and fine arts for the center, Geraldine provides after-school educational and arts programs for children and teens.

Music for this edition comes from the Black Diamond Choir, a 125-member gospel choir that has been a fixture at the University of Louisville since 1969, and from contemporary bluegrass band Soulgrass of Horse Cave.
