Abby MarlattAbby Marlatt
Lexington
1916-

Abby Marlatt is a retired professor of nutrition. While teaching at the University of Kentucky during the 1960s, she helped students who wanted to call attention to the injustices of the times. She helped them organize and train for nonviolent direct action, joined them for sit-ins at lunch counters in downtown Lexington, and helped in the negotiations that led to the desegregation of public accommodations such as restaurants and movie theaters.

Marlatt also was a leader in the effort to form the Lexington Chapter of the Congress on Racial Equality, dedicated to opening up job opportunities for African Americans. She has worked with the Lexington Committee on Religion and Human Rights, helping to establish the Community Action Council in 1965, and with MicroCity Government.
