Role of Women

Women played an important but little-acknowledged role in the civil rights movement, both in Kentucky and nationwide. In Kentucky, women initiated school desegregation efforts, organized and participated in rallies and sit-ins, played leadership roles in civil rights organizations, and provided “bridge building” between the white and black communities. They also raised money, prepared food for meetings and victory celebrations, and provided overnight accommodations to traveling demonstrators.
