Course Description: Fall 2008

Living Literature - Part I image

Living Literature is a college-level television course taught by Jeffrey Lynch of Eastern Illinois University. The purpose of the course is to introduce undergraduate students to the primary literary texts that have shaped Western culture, to challenge students to think critically and creatively about that cultural tradition and their place as individuals within it, and to demonstrate the vitality of classic texts which transcend time and place.

Beginning with Genesis and the Book of Job, the course includes selected works of Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Moliere, Milton, Voltaire, Goethe, Flaubert, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Kafka. The orientation of the course is the relevance of each particular text to the students' lives and identities. As Mr. Lynch states: "the purpose of the course is to introduce students to the great questions and issues that have confronted humankind since its inception. In essence, such a course is a confrontation with self through imaginary texts which seek to render human experience in a meaningful way. Various themes will emerge during the course: the problem of identity ("Who am I? Where did I come from?"); the problem of codes and value systems ("How should I live my life?"); the problem of growing up ("What does it mean to be adult? What do I gain? What do I lose?"); society; God and religion; illusion and reality; war and violence; art and the artist. These are the great issues of life and the great issues addressed through the classics of imaginative literature." Each work will be discussed by Mr. Lynch and an interactive student audience, with inserted commentaries from leading scholars.

Living Literature was produced by Governors State University.
