Course Description: Fall 2008

Exploring the World of Music is an introductory undergraduate television/audio course designed to create an understanding of the essential nature of music and its broad international cultural applications. The twelve half-hour television programs explore the commonalities and the diverse uses of the basic musical elements—melody, rhythm, texture, timbre, harmony—that bind all music together, and reveal how these tools are used to provide sounds of infinite variety.

The series examines theories about the origins of music-making and the role played by music in all cultures to stir human emotion and influence human activity. Audiences will discover how music is used to inspire religious feeling, prepare individuals for war, help people work, enhance games and play, and even stimulate the passion and love needed to propagate and nurture the human species. Viewers will also experience music made simply for its own sake, as art or entertainment, performed for others or for individual fulfillment.

Through the series, viewers discover the beauty of music made by people around the world. They see and hear many proficient music talents, some of whom are well known, and others whose performances are admired only in their homeland or in a province. The question of how human beings create music, implicit in all programs leads to an investigation of the basis technical elements that characterize all music on Earth. The distinctive characteristics of these elements will emerge as their roles in creating music are shown in different cultures and historical periods.

An essential companion to this course will be a set of twelve one-hour audio CD's and cassettes that will be a learning component for the student and an appealing supplement for the general audience. These stereo tapes will provide comprehensive and intensive experience carefully designed to build listening and analytic skills. Components for the audio range from fuller performances of music, excerpted in the television programs, to specially constructed illustrations of technical exercises on rhythm, melody, texture, harmony, and timbre.
