Kevin Powell, political activist
Kevin Powell of Brooklyn, N.Y., is a prominent political activist and writer. A New Jersey native, he attended Rutgers University. He was a founding staff member of Vibe and has written books of poetry and political essays. He was a cast member on the first season of MTV’s The Real World and is known as an authority on hip-hop culture. He organized the 2007 Black and Male in America conference in Brooklyn and was a 2008 candidate for Congress.
