AIDS in Black America (#742)
The PBS program Frontline recently presented a groundbreaking two-hour documentary, Endgame: AIDS in Black America. This edition of Connections focuses on AIDS in Kentucky's African-American population. Every nine minutes someone in America is infected with HIV; half of them are black. The statistics paint a bleak picture of progress against the disease, but some activists believe the tools to end it are closer than we think. Representatives of the Kentucky Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Branch discuss the statistics and efforts to help reduce transmission through education. Guests are Beverly Mitchell, the minority initiatives coordinator, and Medina Tipton, the HIV/AIDS surveillance coordinator.
