Unity in the Community (#206)
Panelists discuss the evolution of Boyle County’s Unity in the Community event, which grew out of an agreement among pastors that churches should take the lead in breaking down racial barriers. It ultimately became a partnership among 10 churches—five with predominantly white memberships and five with mostly black members—representing a cross-section of Christian denominations in Boyle County: Baptist, A.M.E., Presbyterian, Assembly of God, and others. The Unity in the Community pastors also invited other churches in the county to sign on as supporters.
Renee speaks with two of the participating ministers: Jerry Shepard, senior minister at First Christian Church, and William Jenkins of St. James A.M.E. Church. She also interviews Willie Newby, pastor of First Baptist Church Perryville, and Kirsten Carey, worship leader at Cornerstone Assembly of God.
