Mental Illness (#304)
Renee interviews Jennifer Dishman and Yolanda Kelso, two Lexington women who organized the Multicultural Action Ccommittee for their local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The two women talk with Renee about breaking the stigma attached to mental illness within the black community.
Both Kelso and Dishman have struggled with depression, and they talk about how this very personal perspective informs their advocacy work. They also discuss the symptoms of depression and other mental illnesses, treatment options, how faith-based organizations and leaders can help, the rise in suicide among young black males, and the links between depression and violent crime.
