Looking Back at General Assembly 2009 (#430)

According to the 2009 “State of African Americans in Kentucky” (pdf file, 24 pages), a report of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, only seven of the 137 state legislators are African American. Only one member of the 37-member state Senate is African American, Sen. Gerald A. Neal, D-Louisville. Of the 100 state House members, six are African Americans: Rep. Arnold Simpson, D-Covington; Rep. Darryl T. Owens, D-Louisville; Rep. Reginald Meeks, D-Louisville; Rep. Derrick Graham, D-Frankfort; Rep. Jim Glenn, D-Owensboro, and Rep. Jesse Crenshaw, D-Lexington.
