Soreyda Benedit Begley, fashion designer (#535)
Soreyda Benedit Begley was born in Honduras, where as a child she sewed by hand and used any materials she could find for her creations. She entered a sewing academy there at the age of 13, where she learned the techniques for pattern making and garment construction. She came to the United States after marrying her husband, archaeologist Chris Begley, and has lived here for the past 10 years.
Her clothing line, S. Benedit, debuted in spring 2005. She still uses unconventional materials in her designs, such as creating an evening gown with a reversible skirt out of neckties and silk chiffon. Her unique creations have been shown on the runway and in art shows around Kentucky and in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. She has expanded her line by including cocktail and evening dresses. Her clothing is available at Zag's Boutique in Lexington.
