Rufus Friday, Lexington Herald-Leader Publisher (#719)

Before coming to Lexington to take the helm as publisher of the Lexington Herald-Leader, Rufus Friday was president and publisher of the Tri-City Herald in eastern Washington state, a newspaper also owned by the McClatchy Co.

Friday was born in South Carolina and raised in Gastonia, N.C. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1984 with a degree in business management and economics. He went to work for the Raleigh, N.C., News and Observer's circulation department, where he spent the next eight years. He then moved to the Gannett Co., directing circulation for newspapers in Tennessee, Illinois, and Alabama for 11 years. He also worked for two years as vice president of circulation for the News and Observer before becoming publisher at the Tri-City Herald.
